Charlie Kirk氏の暗殺の報に接して・・

今年の9月10日にアメリカの保守活動家であったチャーリー・カーク氏が、ユタ州の大学キャンパス内で討論活動の最中に

何者かに銃殺されました。31歳といえば、私の息子と同年齢です。素敵な奥様とかわいいお子さんを残してこの世を去らなくてはならなかったご本人のお気持ちを考えると言葉もありません。ただただ胸が痛みます・・・。

事件後に配信された奥様のコメント動画を拝聴しました。彼女の一言一言から、カーク氏がどれほど家族思いの温かい方であったかを垣間見ることができました。

それまで、彼のことを全くといっていいほど知らなかった私は、彼の存在に関心を持ち、彼の活動に関する動画もいくつか観ました。ある動画は、ケンブリッジ大学内での討論の様子でした。自分の意見と異なる大学生たちと1対1で討論を交し合うその様子に心打たれました。

自分と意見を同じにするグループでは、活発に話をする人は多いでしょう。私もその1人です。しかし、意見を異にする方たちの中へ入っていって、話し合いの場を持つには多大な労力と勇気を必要とします。普通はしたがりません。

31歳でこういった活動をされてきたカーク氏を深く尊敬します。しかも、世界中の若者たちに向かってそれを成してこられたことに敬意以外の何をもって接すればいいのでしょう？

私と同じキリスト教の信仰をもち、その土台の上にこのような活動をされてきたプロセスに深く関心を持ち始めています。

On September 10, 2025, Mr. Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist in the United States, was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while engaged in a debate activity on a university campus in Utah. He was only 31 years old—the same age as my son. When I think of his feelings as he had to leave behind his wonderful wife and lovely child, I am at a loss for words. My heart aches deeply.

After the incident, I watched a video message delivered by his wife. Through each of her words, I could glimpse what a warm, family-oriented man Mr. Kirk was.

Until then, I hardly knew anything about him, but I became interested in his life and watched several videos of his work. One of them showed him in a debate at the University of Cambridge. I was deeply moved by the way he engaged in one-on-one discussions with students who held views different from his own.

It is easy to speak actively within a group of people who share the same opinions. I myself am one of those people. However, to enter into a group that disagrees with you and to create an opportunity for dialogue requires great effort and courage—something most of us would rather avoid.

I deeply respect Mr. Kirk for carrying out such activities at the age of 31. Moreover, what can I offer but admiration for the fact that he did this before young people around the world?

Sharing the same Christian faith, I am now becoming deeply interested in the process by which he carried out such work on the foundation of that faith.
